Ethical Use of GenAI: A Pedagogical Framework to Enhancing English Writing Learning

Abstract

As emerging technologies such as ChatGPT continue to evolve, they present a remarkable opportunity to revolutionize the essay writing process for both primary, secondary, and even tertiary students. These innovative tools can provide tailored feedback and promote independent learning in English writing. However, the swift integration of Generative AI (GenAI) also brings forth concerns regarding potential misuse, including an over-reliance on AI-generated content and the challenges of academic integrity.
This seminar will answer the call from the GenAI Guideline issued by the Hong Kong Digital Policy Office in April this year, introducing a pilot pedagogical approach aimed at leveraging the advantages of GenAI while tackling the challenges it poses within K-12 and higher education.

The presenters will present a comprehensive pedagogical framework designed for both educators and students, accompanied by a demonstration of a pre-trained GenAI tool specifically tailored for English writing and self-assessment. The seminar will also discuss the effectiveness of these tools in enhancing students’ writing abilities and promoting ethical practices. By thoughtfully integrating GenAI into the K-12 educational framework, our goal is to encourage responsible usage and aid in the development of critical writing skills among K-12 and tertiary students.
