Empowering AI Reading Education with Smart Reading

Abstract

Amid the global wave of digital transformation, AI-powered educational tools are significantly reshaping the landscape of primary and secondary education, particularly by opening new possibilities in the development of reading literacy. Developed by Taiwan Normal University, Smart Reading integrates an AI-based computerized assessment tool—“Diagnostic Assessment of Chinese Competence (DACC) “—to evaluate students’ reading abilities accurately. Based on the results, the system intelligently matches learners with texts of appropriate difficulty, offering personalized reading materials and curated book recommendations.

The research team has introduced the “Five Dimensions of Reading” framework, which combines reading process data with assessment outcomes to help students gain self-awareness of their reading performance. At the same time, the platform provides teachers with real-time AI-based feedback and instructional references, facilitating the implementation of differentiated teaching strategies. By serving as a bridge between diagnosis and instruction, Smart Reading establishes a comprehensive support system for reading development, offering innovative and practical solutions for the future of adaptive reading education.
